About This Tour
Karaköy and Galata form one of Istanbul's most layered and overlooked quarters — a hillside neighbourhood where Genoese merchants, Sephardic Jewish banking families, Ottoman architects, Greek and Armenian craftsmen, and modern cultural institutions have all left their marks within a single square kilometre.
This walking tour follows a continuous downhill route from Galata Tower to the Bosphorus waterfront, uncovering the financial, maritime, and multicultural history of late Ottoman Istanbul. Along the way you will visit the former Imperial Ottoman Bank, walk through Bankalar Avenue's historic financial corridor, and explore a mosque built inside the foundations of a Byzantine fortress.
The route covers approximately 1.5 kilometres with no backtracking, finishing directly at Galataport on the water's edge with panoramic views of the Bosphorus and the Historic Peninsula across the strait.
