The Experience

About This Tour

Karaköy and Galata form one of Istanbul's most layered and overlooked quarters — a hillside neighbourhood where Genoese merchants, Sephardic Jewish banking families, Ottoman architects, Greek and Armenian craftsmen, and modern cultural institutions have all left their marks within a single square kilometre.

This walking tour follows a continuous downhill route from Galata Tower to the Bosphorus waterfront, uncovering the financial, maritime, and multicultural history of late Ottoman Istanbul. Along the way you will visit the former Imperial Ottoman Bank, walk through Bankalar Avenue's historic financial corridor, and explore a mosque built inside the foundations of a Byzantine fortress.

The route covers approximately 1.5 kilometres with no backtracking, finishing directly at Galataport on the water's edge with panoramic views of the Bosphorus and the Historic Peninsula across the strait.

What Makes This Tour

Key Highlights

SALT Galata & Ottoman Bank

Step inside the former Imperial Ottoman Bank — now SALT Galata — and descend into the original bank vaults. One of Istanbul's finest adaptive reuse projects, with free admission.

Bankalar Avenue Financial History

Walk the street that once housed the Ottoman Empire's most powerful banks and trading houses — a corridor of Genoese, Jewish, Greek, and Armenian commercial heritage rarely covered in standard tours.

Mimar Sinan's Final Masterpiece

The Kılıç Ali Paşa Complex was completed in 1580 when Sinan was over ninety years old — a late career achievement that demonstrates how the architect pushed Ottoman design to its final frontier.

Continuous Downhill Route

The entire route descends from Galata Tower to the Bosphorus waterfront with no backtracking — a rare one-way walking itinerary that finishes directly on the water at Galataport.

Underground Mosque

The Yeraltı Mosque is built directly inside the foundations of a Byzantine fortress — one of the most unusual sacred spaces in the city, housing the tombs of early Islamic martyrs and marking where Istanbul's famous Golden Horn chain was anchored.

Multicultural Heritage

Karaköy's streets reflect centuries of coexistence between Genoese traders, Sephardic Jewish merchants, Greek and Armenian craftsmen, and Ottoman administrators — a layered story that defined Istanbul's cosmopolitan character.
