3 Days in Istanbul: A Local's Itinerary

Three days in Istanbul is never enough — but in the right hands, it can be transformative. This is the itinerary we give to guests who ask us one simple question: if you had three days, what would you do?

Day 1 — The Old City

Start in Sultanahmet before 9 AM. At that hour, Hagia Sophia is quiet enough to hear your own thoughts — the morning light through the windows is something the afternoon crowds never witness. Walk between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. These two buildings, built fifteen centuries apart, still argue across the square about which empire understood beauty better.

Descend into the Basilica Cistern before the tour groups arrive. Then walk north through the Grand Bazaar's quieter morning lanes — not to shop, but to understand how a city feeds and clothes itself.

Evening: a meyhane dinner in Kumkapı. Order a spread of cold meze, let the evening move slowly, and don't miss the fresh fish.

Day 2 — Across the Water

Take the morning ferry to Kadıköy. This is where Istanbul does its real shopping — not for tourists, but for itself. The market is tightly packed with cheese, olives, spice, vegetables, simit still warm from the oven.

Explore Üsküdar in the afternoon, where Ottoman mosques perch above the Bosphorus and the Maiden's Tower stands mid-strait. Return by ferry at golden hour — watch the European skyline turn amber from the water. This is the moment most visitors miss entirely.

Evening in Karaköy: the neighbourhood that bridges old Istanbul and the new. Excellent fish restaurants, the Galata Tower visible from every street corner.

Day 3 — Hidden and Modern

Fener and Balat in the morning. The coloured houses, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, the ancient synagogues, the corner teahouses that have barely changed in decades. This neighbourhood is one of the most photogenic places in the city and remains genuinely off the main tourist circuit.

Afternoon: Istanbul Modern on the Bosphorus waterfront for world-class contemporary art, then a walk up through Galata and along İstiklal Caddesi.

Finish on a rooftop terrace in Beyoğlu with a view of the Golden Horn and something cold. Watch the light leave the minarets. Then start planning your return.

Practical Notes

Book Hagia Sophia for first opening. The Cistern is best before 10 AM. The Kadıköy ferry departs from Eminönü — buy an Istanbulkart at the pier. Fener and Balat are best explored on foot with a local guide who knows which doors are open and which alleyways lead where. Dress modestly for religious sites throughout.

Experience Istanbul with a private guide

Every article we write is something our guides live and share every day. If you'd like to see Istanbul through their eyes — personally, privately, at your own pace — we'd love to arrange it.
